Turn on the haunch to canter
This is an exercise taken from the western world but revamped for dressage schooling or even jumpers. This helps teaches horses how to do halt to canter and pick up the correct lead on a straight line.
The exercise:
Walk/trot or canter (dependent on skill level) down the quarter line. Ask horse to halt. You may need to back a step to make sure they are engaging their core and rounded. Turn on the haunch 180° toward the rail (towards centerline if your goal is countercanter). When you are parallel to the rail in the opposite direction, ask for the canter. The turn on the haunch served to get the leading leg forward.
