I love training young horses. My favourite which is also the most difficult part is to make them comfortable with the eventing situation, to get them accustomed to the hustle and bustle of the warm up area. It is a challenge, but it's so worth IT 🐴

One of my biggest challenges was turning my very anxious rescue into a confident horse. She was extremely distrustful of people and very scared of many things- especially sudden noises and trailers. She quickly would try and flee or prepare for a fight with minimal convincing. My triumph secret is going slow and tons of ground work in new locations. For example: Im lucky my barn offers long term trailer parking, and that it's near grass. Id hand graze my mare and each time, bring her closer to them until she could eat knowing they wouldnt harm her. One of my barn friends show alot so she's always trailering and un/loading horses- so with her permission I let my horse graze nearby. When she repeatedly got to see and be around an actively used trailer, I let her graze closer and closer till none of it phased her anymore. We're now setup to start trailer training! Ive done similar with her for other things too, tarps, the scary pond with lots of turtles, near the gelding pasture with all of them being goofballs, ect- lots of hikes, hand grazing, and groundwork in new areas. I know it's working because maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago, she accidentally clipped a metal stool while we were walking to the cross-ties. Tons of noise, it fell against her, even almost got a hoof caught on it- but rather than panic and bolt, she took a moment to think through the problem. I got the chair put back and we continued like nothing happened- I couldnt have been more proud. Her next step is to continue this confidence while also learning to be under saddle. ♡
