I have a 2 year old thoroughbred cross and I am trying to teach him to back. He is great for a few steps then he goes sideways. Is there anything I can do to help him go straight back?

I also normally teach them next to a fence, on the ground, and pressing on the chest with a quick release of pressure when they step back with clear diagonal steps. You may need more "forward" going back - a slow sticky back gets more crooked.
